Handy Person Scheme Offers Free Help for Small Jobs Around the Home

Residents in Westmorland and Furness who need help with small but essential household jobs may be able to access support through the Handy Person Scheme, delivered by Westmorland and Furness Council.

The scheme is designed to assist older people, disabled residents and vulnerable adults who are unable to carry out tasks themselves and do not have anyone available to help. Labour is provided free of charge, with householders only paying for any materials required.

The service can help with a wide range of simple but important tasks around the home, helping residents stay safe, independent and comfortable.

Examples of jobs the scheme can help with include:

  • Changing light bulbs

  • Putting up shelving, pictures or curtain rails

  • Installing grab rails or handrails

  • Minor plumbing repairs such as replacing tap washers

  • Unblocking sinks

  • Fitting security measures such as window or door locks

  • Small garden repairs or fixing gates and fences

  • Fitting smoke alarms or replacing batteries

The scheme is available to residents living in the Westmorland and Furness Council area who are aged 65+, disabled, vulnerable, or at risk of falls.
